Annual Gathering of called A FibreWorks Gathering

Saturday, February 27th from 9 am - 3 pm at the Swatara Church of God

With just a name change, the 'Gathering' will include Guild Displays, Schoolhouses (Make-it/Take-its) and Blackboards, as usual. The church will have their homemade soups, sandwiches and sweets for sale. Admission is canned food items, or cash donations, for the Central PA Food Bank. No pre-registrtation required for A FibreWorks Gathering...come when you can...leave when you must.

The Gathering of Guilds has become a premier fiber art event for inspiration, education and connection. Two underlying themes bind us together: mindful stitching and creating traditions and rituals.

Mindful stitching has recently been coined “slow stitching” and has spawned an international movement. In 2004, Carl Honorés 2004 book In Praise of Slow defined the Slow Movement, which encompasses all areas of life, as a cultural revolution against the notion that faster is always better. “It’s not about doing everything at a snail’s pace...but to live at what musicians call tempo giusto - - the right speed.”

A slow approach to stitch and fiber art projects is an enriching process. Claire Wellesley-Smith’s book Slow Stitch suggests that simply thinking about your choice of materials offers an opportunity for reflection, to take time over the choosing of them, and to reflect on those choices as you work with them. The process of making by hand means a maker has a relationship with the object being made because he or she physically engages with it.

Traditions and rituals are part of our DNA, often without our awareness. Traditions are created, or continued, when we make a Christmas stocking for each family member, or a bonnet & dress for a christening, or a baby quilt, etc...a physical object that brings meaning to another. Rituals are those things we do over and over, on purpose. A ritual is making a new Christmas ornament each year for family member, or for special friends, as is the giving of pillowcases, quilts, preemie gowns.

14th Annual Gathering
February 27, 2016

9 am - 3 pm

Guilds will display the work of their members, demonstrate various techniques, and offer a variety of Schoolhouses (formerly Make-It/Take-Its), and Blackboards (large group presentations/demos). Most guilds are set up in the Gym, but there are a few set up downstairs...we don't want you to miss any!!!

The Schoolhouses (held on the Lower Level) are offered for a fee of $5-20 to cover the cost of materials; sign-up the day of the event. The Blackboards (held in the Sanctuary) are free. This is an excellent opportunity to network with like-minded people, learn a new technique, or re-visit a previous interest.

Children, ages 8 & up, are encouraged to participate.

About Us

The Gathering of Guilds began in 2003 to provide an opportunity for the public to connect with local fiber and needlework-related guilds in the Central Pennsylvania Region. Because many guilds meet in churches and libraries, it may be difficult for interested persons to find a local guild.

The Keystone Lace Guild has been the host for this annual one-day event on the last Saturday in February from 9 am - 4 pm at the Swatara Church of God, 4860 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111.

Admission: Canned food items for the Central PA Food Bank. Cash donations also accepted.

Food: The church sells homemade soups, sandwiches and baked goods. We encourage you to support their sale because they provide the facility, parking, and volunteers at no charge to us.

Schoolhouses & Blackboards: Guilds will offer hour-long projects for a small materials fee, as well as demonstrations & informational presentations throughout the day.

Limited Handicap Accessibility: Activities are held on both levels of the building. The guild displays, Blackboards, and food are on the main level; Schoolhouses are held on the lower level. There is a chair lift to the lower level, and an outside entrance to the lower level. Restrooms on both levels.

Parking: If you are planning to spend most of the day at the Gathering, we encourage you to park across the street at the WITF Public Media Center. The church provides a shuttle van to take you to the church and back. Thank you!

Weather: If weather becomes a concern, please check this website or, WHP-TV21, and other media outlets as available, or call (717) 938-2904, (717) 599-4726 or (717) 599-4728. Should the National Weather Service issue a weather advisory or alert, the Gathering will be cancelled.
